Austria took part in the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan with a delegation of 40 athletes, 29 men and 11 women.

Since 1924 it was Austria's eleventh participation in the Winter Olympic Games .

Flag bearer

Luge athlete Manfred Schmid carried the Austrian flag during the opening ceremony in the Makomanai Stadium .

Medals

With a recovered gold, two silver and two bronze medals, the Austrian team was ranked 9 in the medals table .
