Heinrich "Heini" Messner (born September 1, 1939 in Obernberg am Brenner , Tyrol ) is a former Austrian ski racer .

Active career

Messner won the first ski world cup race in history; he was only placed in 10th place in the relevant slalom in Berchtesgaden after the first run; it was his only victory in the World Cup. Further successes were the bronze medals in giant slalom and in combination at the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble . At the 1972 Olympic Games in Sapporo , he was third in downhill skiing despite a bad flu .
At the 1970 World Championships in Val Gardena , he was initially in 14th place in the slalom classification, but was disqualified because of a peat error (which meant that no ÖSV runner remained in the ranking).

With a total of nine second places, 17 top three places and 50 top ten places, it is one of the greats of the Ski World Cup. He was also fourth in the downhill at the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble and fourth in the giant slalom at the World Ski Championships in Val Gardena in 1970.
Messner was a member of the Austrian national team as early as the late 1950s - before the introduction of the Ski World Cup. In a fall on January 25, 1962 in downhill training for the "Coppa Ilio Colli" on the Tofana in Cortina d'Ampezzo , he suffered a fracture of his right ankle, so he was out of the 1962 World Championships in Chamonix and the rest of the season.

Extract from Heini Messner's list of successes outside the World Cup: Among other things, on February 13, 1966, when he won the giant slalom in Madonna di Campiglio, he also won the combined ranking of the "Tre-Tre" competitions at the "Five-Country Meeting / Buddy Werner" -Trophy “in Sun Valley he won the downhill on March 25, 1966. In the “Tre-Tre” races in 1967 (Madonna - February 3–5), which were not part of the World Cup (except for the slalom), he won the downhill and was second in the station wagon. On 25/26 In February 1967 he was Austrian champion in giant slalom and slalom in Schruns. And at the Kandahar races (Sestriere - March 4th / 5th) he won the slalom, which is also not part of the World Cup, and came third in the combined event. He won the Lauberhorn combination in 1969.

With rank 6 in the downhill run in Val Gardena on March 15, 1972, he finished his running career (which had already been announced during the season).

Trainer of the Austrian women's team

At the age of 33 Messner ended his active career and became a coach. On June 17, 1972 commissioned by the racing committee of the ÖSV, he looked after the women's team for two years. With him (including Wiltrud Drexel , Ingrid Gfölner , Monika Kaserer , Irmgard Lukasser , Annemarie Pröll , Brigitte Schroll , Brigitte Totschnig ) he celebrated numerous successes.

Private citizen

After his resignation Messner ran a ski school and a pension; he still runs a ski rental and ski service today. Messner lives in Steinach am Brenner , his brother Alfred was also a ski racer and a member of the Tyrolean ski team.
