The Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC) nominated on 23 August 2000 92 athletes (55 men and 37 women) to participate in the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney . The team was officially bid farewell to the Federal President Thomas Klestil in the Hofburg on August 31 .
The standard bearer at the opening ceremony was the shooter Wolfram Waibel Jr. who won a silver and bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and was Austria's most successful athlete.
