The United States of America took part in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in the Australian metropolis of Sydney with 586 athletes, 333 men and 253 women, in 31 sports.
Since 1896 it was the 23rd participation of the United States in the Summer Olympics .
Flag bearer
Canoeist Cliff Meidl wore the stars and stripes , the flag of the United States , during the opening ceremony at Stadium Australia , at the closing ceremony it was carried by wrestler Rulon Gardner .
Medals
37 won gold, 24 silver and 32 bronze medals, the US team took 1st place in the medals table .

Note: Ervin and Hall reached the finish line in the men's 50 meter swimming competitions in exactly 21.98 seconds and therefore shared the gold medal. The same applied to the women's swimming competitions over 100 meters, in which Thompson and Torres swam the same time and thus both won bronze.
