Lawrence Johnson (born May 7, 1974 in Norfolk , Virginia ) is a former American pole vaulter .
At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , he finished eighth. He celebrated his greatest success by winning the silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney behind his compatriot Nick Hysong . A total of four athletes had jumped a height of 5.90 m, so that the number of unsuccessful attempts decided on the medal award. The Russian Maxim Tarasov received the bronze medal and the German Michael Stolle landed in fourth place.
In 2001 Johnson won the gold medal at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Lisbon with a height of 5.95 m, after having finished second in Paris in 1997 .
He was also seven times American champion in high jump, four times outdoors (1996-1997, 2000-2001) and three times indoors (1997, 2000-2001).
Lawrence Johnson had a competition weight of 86 kg with a height of 1.85 m. After the end of his active career, he began working as a pole vault coach.
