Daniel Benjamin Califf (born March 17, 1980 in Montclair , California ) is a retired American football player .

Career

Youth and college

Califf played for the Canyon Classic team in the Canyon Hills Soccer Association as a youth. The team was trained by his father.

From 1998 to 2000 he played at the University of Maryland for the Maryland Terrapins. In his first year as a freshman, he was on the pitch in all 24 games. As a sophomore, he played 20 times for the selection team.

professional

After completing his sophomore year in college, he signed a Project 40 contract with Major League Soccer and was selected in the Los Angeles Galaxy MLS SuperDraft in 2000. At the Galaxies, Califf immediately made it into the starting eleven. In his first year he played for the team 18 times. Over the next three years, Danny Califf established himself as one of the best defensive players in the league. With Los Angeles Galaxy he won the US Open Cup in 2001 and the MLS Cup in 2002. He played a large part in both successes through his style of play. In 2004 he was injured and was only able to stand 10 times for the Californians.

At the beginning of the 2005 season, he moved to the San José Earthquakes for a fee . He returned to his old form and was nominated for the MLS Best XI of the 2005 season. At the end of the season he moved again.

From 2006 to 2008 Califf played for the Danish first division club Aalborg BK. He was also a regular here from the start. After the 2006/2007 season, Califf was captain of the team and led them to the Danish championship. But at the end of the 2007/2008 season, the players and the club could not agree on a new contract. He then moved to FC Midtjylland .

On December 3, 2009, the Philadelphia Union announced that it had obtained the MLS rights to Califf. He will play for the MLS franchise for the 2010 season. Even before his first game at Union, he was named captain of the team. He had to give up this position before the start of the 2011 season. He scored his first goal on matchday 1 of Major League Soccer 2011 .

In 2012 he played for one season for the CD Chivas USA . In 2013 he moved to Toronto FC . There he announced his resignation on June 12, 2013.

He then worked for ProConnect Sports, an organization that looks after football clubs. He is the player-coach for Bearfight FC of Wilmington, an amateur team that plays in the leagues of the United States Adult Soccer Association .

National team

Califf played for every national team in the United States from the U-17. He took part in the 1997 FIFA U-17 World Championship and in 1999 he was on the squad for the Junior World Cup . In 2000 he was part of the selection team for the Olympic Games.

His first international match for the US national team was on January 19, 2002 against South Korea. In the next few years he was on the squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournaments in 2002 and 2003 and for the Confederations Cup in 2003.

In the last group game during the Copa America 2007 he was captain of the team.
