1924 Winter Olympics / Participant (United States)
The United States participated in the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix with a delegation of 24 athletes in four sports. The American NOK had registered 25 athletes for the games, of which 24 took part in competitions. A total of 5 athletes took part in the Olympic Games for the second time:
- Theresa Blanchard (1920 figure skating)
- Herbert Drury (1920 ice hockey)
- Gerry Geran (1920 ice hockey)
- Nathaniel Niles (1920 figure skating)
- Frank Synott (1920 ice hockey)
Results: The Americans came to Chamonix as exotic and drove back home as the fourth best nation. With the exception of the ice hockey team, which had already booked the silver medal in advance, and the figure skaters Theresa Blanchard and Nathaniel Niles , none of the other registered Olympic participants were known in Europe. Therefore, nobody could assess how strong the American team really was. Charles Jewtraw ( speed skating ) and Beatrix Loughran ( figure skating ) came out of the ashes like Phoenix and were completely surprising on the podium. Jewtraw even becomes the first ever Olympic champion at winter games. 50 years after the Chamonix competitions, the 86-year-old Norwegian native Anders Haugen , who emigrated to the USA before the First World War , was subsequently awarded bronze in ski jumping when a miscalculation by the jury in 1924 was discovered. So in the end there were four medals for the USA. Like Haugen, the skiers Ragnar Omtvedt and Sigurd Overbye were of Norwegian origin.
