Olympic Winter Games 1924 / Participant (Austria)
Austria took part in the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix with a delegation of 4 athletes in 1 sport. The Austrian NOK had registered 18 athletes for the games, 4 of whom took part in competitions.
With the figure skating couple Helena Engelmann and Alfred Berger and Herma Planck-Szabo in the women’s category, Austria has two Olympic champions. In addition, Willy Böckl won the silver medal in the men's competition. This makes the small Alpine republic the third best nation in Chamonix. The ice hockey team, which later became European champions in 1927 and 1931 , canceled its participation before the start of the winter sports weeks. Presumably the Austrians gave away another medal here. Austria's participation was not without bad aftertaste. The dual monarchy Austria-Hungary was considered to be one of the main drivers of war in the First World War. For this reason, Germany was denied participation in Chamonix. Austria and Hungary, on the other hand, were allowed to send athletes, which subsequently led to protests and Germany's approval for the 1928 Winter Games in St. Moritz .
