Austria took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Australia's Melbourne and the equestrian games in the Swedish Stockholm with a delegation of 34 athletes, 29 men and five women, in 36 competitions in twelve sports part.
It was Austria's twelfth participation in the Summer Olympic Games since 1896 .
The youngest athlete was the cyclist Rudolf Maresch at the age of 22 years and nine days , the oldest athlete was the fencer Ellen Müller-Preis (44 years and 208 days).

The cyclist Franz Wimmer carried the flag of Austria during the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium .
