Hungary took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne with a delegation of 108 athletes (88 men and 20 women) in 80 competitions in twelve sports.

The Hungarian athletes won nine gold, ten silver and seven bronze medals. In the medal table, Hungary took sixth place. Olympic champions were the boxer László Papp in the light heavyweight division, Rudolf Kárpáti in saber fencing, the canoeists László Fábián and János Urányi in a two-man kayak over 10,000 meters, the gymnast Ágnes Keleti on the ground, on the uneven bars and on the balance beam team, the water polo saber team of the men Men and the women's group gymnastics team. The standard bearer at the opening ceremony was the hammer thrower József Csermák .
