Lajos Szentgáli

Lajos Szentgáli [ ˈlɒjoʃ ˈsɛnt̬ɡaːli ] (born June 7, 1932 in Budapest ; † November 2, 2005 ibid) was a Hungarian athlete . With a height of 1.70 m, his competition weight was 57 kg.

At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , Szentgáli joined the Hungarian 4 x 400 meter relay , but was eliminated in the run-up.

In 1954, Szentgáli improved the Hungarian record in the 800-meter run to 1: 49.0 minutes. Shortly afterwards he won this distance at the Universiade. On August 28, 1954, the final of the European Championships took place in Bern . Szentgáli won in 1: 47.1 minutes ahead of the Belgian Lucien de Muynck in 1: 47.3 minutes and the Norwegian Audun Boysen in 1: 47.4 minutes. These three runners and also the fourth-placed Brit Derek Johnson in 1: 47.4 minutes ran times that had previously only been undercut by Rudolf Harbig in 1939 in Europe .

Lajos Szentgáli repeated his victory at the Universiade in 1955. In Melbourne at the Olympic Games in 1956 , he was eliminated in advance. At the European Championships in Stockholm in 1958 , he finished fifth in 1: 48.3 minutes.

Szentgáli was the Hungarian champion over 800 meters in 1954, 1956 to 1959 and 1961. In 1961 he also won over 1500 meters . He also set his best performance over 1500 meters of 3: 43.0 min in 1961. His Hungarian record over 800 meters from 1954 of 1: 47.1 minutes was not beaten until 1980.
