Rune Gustafsson (born December 1, 1919 - † June 25, 2011 ) was a Swedish middle-distance runner .

Career

At the European Championships in Oslo in 1946 , he won the 800-meter run in 1: 51.0 minutes before the Dane Niels Holst-Sørensen and the French Marcel Hansenne . Eleven days later he set a world record in the 1000 meter run with 2: 21.4 minutes and improved Rudolf Harbig's old record by a tenth of a second. The world record was set two years later by Hansenne and beaten by Olle Åberg in 1952 .

In September 1947 Gustafsson was involved in another world record in the 4-by-880-yard relay. A quartet consisting of Hans Liljekvist, Ingvar Bengtsson, Olle Lindén and Gustafsson ran in Stockholm 7: 29.0 min.

In 1946 Gustafsson was world best of the year over 800 meters and over 1000 meters. He continued his career until 1951, but could no longer match the performance of 1946.

As an active athlete, Rune Gustafsson was 1.78 m tall and weighed 58 kg.
