Bram Som (born February 20, 1980 in Terborg ) is a Dutch athlete . He specializes in the shorter medium distances between 400 and 1000 meters. Som is a seven-time Dutch champion and was European champion over 800 meters in Gothenburg in 2006 .

He began his sporting career at the age of 7 at the athletics club Atletico'73 in Gendringen . He was active in various disciplines up to the age of 16, but then decided to specialize in the shorter middle distance.

He landed his first success in 1998 with 5th place over 800 meters at the Junior World Championships in Annecy . He confirmed these achievements in the following years. In 2002 he was sixth at the European Championships in Munich , seven months later at the 2003 World Indoor Championships, fifth. On the other hand, his participation in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , where he was eliminated in fifth place in the semifinals, was disappointing .

After he did not compete in 2005 due to an injury to the Achilles tendon , he qualified for the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg by winning the Dutch championship . There, on the last day of the competition, he achieved the greatest success of his career to date when he won the 800 meter title. His gold medal was the first for the Netherlands at European Championships in 24 years. Som's victory was accompanied by a protest, as he briefly left the track in the crowd during the final sprint. However, the jury rejected this objection.

Som has been concentrating on professional pacing in international races since 2013 .

Som is a non-commissioned officer in the Dutch army and is a member of the army's competitive sports group.
