Yevgeny Alexandrovich Arshanov

Yevgeny Alexandrovich Arshanov ( Russian Евгений Александрович Аржанов , English transcription Yevgeniy Arzhanov ; born April 22, 1948 in Kalush , Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Soviet middle -distance runner who had specialized in the 800-meter long distance runner .

At the Olympic Games in 1968 Arshanov qualified for the semifinals, but then did not appear. At the European Athletics Championships in Athens in 1969 , he was fourth in 1: 47.1 min. In 1970 in Vienna he won the first official European Indoor Championships in 1: 51.0 minutes with almost a second advantage. A year later at the European Indoor Championships in Sofia he was the winner in 1: 48.7 minutes, almost two seconds ahead. At the European Championships in Helsinki in 1971 , he won in 1: 45.6 minutes with four tenths of a second ahead of Dieter Fromm from the GDR.

In the finals of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Arshanov took over the lead in the second round and was in the lead until shortly before the finish, but ultimately he was beaten by the fast-paced American Dave Wottle by three hundredths of a second and scored for 1: 45.89 min Silver. In 1973 he won the Universiade in 1: 46.88 min .

In 1970, 1971 and 1973 Arshanov won the Soviet championship title. He ran his personal best of 1: 45.3 minutes on August 17, 1972 at a sports festival in Moscow .

Yevgeny Arshanov is 1.79 m tall and weighed 68 kg during his active time.
