Álvaro de Arriba (born June 2, 1994 in La Sagrada , Salamanca province ) is a Spanish athlete who specializes in medium-distance runs . In 2019 he became European indoor champion over 800 meters.

Athletic career

Álvaro de Arriba first took part in national championships in Spain in 2011. In 2013 he qualified for the U20 European Championships in Rieti, where he narrowly missed the 800 meter entry into the final and ended up ninth. Two years later he went to the U23 European Championships in Tallinn. There he also failed in the semi-finals, with a slightly improved time compared to the U20 European Championships, which meant 14th place in the end.

In 2016 he took part in an international adult championship for the first time at the World Indoor Championships in Portland. In a time of 1:52, 60 minutes he came in 13th place. The following summer he also took part in the European Championships in Amsterdam. There he ran to seventh place with an improved time of 1: 47.58 minutes. At the Olympic Games he improved the time again, but did not get past 20th place there.

In 2017 he won a medal in international championships for the first time at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade. With 1: 49.68 m he ran to bronze. At the subsequent World Championships in London, he failed in the semi-finals and ended up in 16th place. In 2018, he finished fifth in 1: 48.51 min at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham. In June he then ran his personal best of 1: 44.99 minutes. He could not confirm this time at the European Championships in Berlin and was seventh there in 1: 46.41 min.

In 2019 he achieved his greatest sporting success to date with the victory at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow. At the World Championships in Doha, he moved into the semi-finals. There he ran in his run with 1: 46.09 min. the third fastest time and so narrowly missed the entry into the final because he was not one of the fastest third placed.

Álvaro de Arriba was born in La Sagrada, in the province of Salamanca, in western Spain. As a child, his parents moved with him and his brother to La Fuente de San Esteban , where they grew up. At the age of 10 he started athletics there under the supervision of Juan Carlos Fuentes, who trains him to this day.
