Noel Carroll (athlete)
Noel Carroll (born December 7, 1941 in Annagassan , County Louth , Ireland , † October 23, 1998 in Dublin , Ireland) was an Irish middle-distance runner , local politician and sports organizer.
Life
Carroll dropped out of school at 13, took a variety of odd jobs, and eventually volunteered for the army at 18. There his athletic talent was recognized and he was promoted. At an indoor sports festival in New York City in 1962, he received an offer for a university scholarship from Jumbo Elliott of Villanova University in Philadelphia . He took the opportunity to study without a university entrance qualification, quit the army, and successfully completed a course in communication science after a preparatory course . In 1964 he represented Ireland over 800m at the Olympic Games . By emphasizing the indoor season in Villanova (intense tempo runs in winter on an indoor wooden track outdoors), he did not manage to be in shape at the end of a long season at the Olympic Games in October. He won the European Athletics Indoor Championships three times (1966, 1967, 1968). At the Olympic Games in 1968 he took part over 400 m and 800 m. During his playing days he was 1.88 m tall and weighed 79 kg. At the end of his sporting career he first became press spokesman, then executive director of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce . In this capacity he founded the Dublin Marathon and through his connections also found suitable sponsors. He was also a journalist and was involved in the Irish fitness and endurance movement. He died of a heart attack during his daily endurance run. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Irish Athletics. The Dublin Marathon winner will receive the Noel Carroll Memorial Trophy .
