Dublin marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dublin Marathon is a marathon in Dublin that has been held annually on Autumn Bank Holiday , the last Monday in October, since 1980 . It is one of the ten largest marathons in Europe.

route

The start is on Baggot Street, east of St. Stephen's Green . On the north side of Trinity College , it goes over the O'Connell Bridge onto O'Connell Street with the Spire . Soon after, you leave the city center and embark on a large circuit that runs counter-clockwise through the suburbs of Dublin. First you go to Phoenix Park , then you switch to the right bank of the Liffey and return to the city center via the suburbs of Crumlin, Rathgar, Donnybrook and Ballsbridge. There the grounds of Trinity College are circumnavigated before reaching the destination in Merrion Square. With about 150 meters of altitude , the course has a rather wavy profile.

history

Samunnati Lehonkova, 2015

With its first year in 1980, the Dublin Marathon is one of the oldest city runs in the world. After two years, with 8,750 finishers, more than six times as many runners were at the finish as at the first event. A similarly high number of participants was only reached again in 1988 at the millennium of the city of Dublin. In the period that followed, they stayed below the 3000 mark. As a result of the running boom in recent years and the increasing interest of foreign runners (most of them from Great Britain and the United States ), who now make up around half of the starting field, the number of finishers is now well over 10,000 (as of 2013).

The most prominent (and at the same time the last) local runners who made it onto the list of winners are John Treacy (1993) and Sonia O'Sullivan (2000).

On October 28, 2018, the European Police Championships were held here as part of the race.
