Neil Cusack

Neil Cusack (born December 30, 1951 in Limerick , Ireland ) is a retired Irish long-distance runner.

Career

Neil Cusack attended St. Munchin's Secondary School . He then moved to the USA, where he studied business management at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City .

Career as an athlete

Cusack turned to running and was mainly active as a medium and long-distance runner. In 1971 he caused a stir when he ran his first marathon at the Atlanta Marathon, the so-called Peachbowl Marathon, which ran until 2013. With a time of 2: 16: 18.2 h he immediately managed to win. In 1972 he won the NCAA cross-country championships .

Neil Cusack represented Ireland at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich in the 10,000 meter run . He started in the second run, but retired in tenth with a time of 28: 45.8 minutes.

In the following years, Cusack concentrated on the longer distance, the marathon. In 1974 he won the Boston Marathon in a time of 2:13:39 h and was able to beat the favorite Tom Fleming .

At the 1976 Olympic marathon in Montreal , he crossed the finish line after 2: 35: 47.2 hours as 55th of 60 runners.

In 1981 Cusack won the second edition of the Dublin Marathon in a time of 2:13:58 h.

Top performances

The time achieved in Munich of 28: 45.8 minutes was Cusack's personal best in the 10,000 meter run. At the Boston Marathon, which he won in 1974, he ran his fastest marathon with 2:13:39 hours.
