La Mer gelée (German: The Frozen Sea ) is a bilingual, Franco-German literary magazine that started in 2000 as an online project by German and French authors and has been published as a print version since 2004 and since 2016 with the following topics:

Founded in Dresden by Alban Lefranc and Robert Seyfert, the magazine had been on hold since 2011, before being published again in a new format in 2016. The title of the magazine refers to a letter from Franz Kafka who wrote in 1904: “A book must be the ax for the frozen sea in us.” The magazine is now published by Le Nouvel Attila; the graphic redesign was initially carried out by Baldinger • Vu-Huu. The editorial team is spread across Berlin, Lyon and Paris; it currently consists of Bernard Banoun, Antoine Brea, Andreas Förster, Noémi Lefebvre, Alban Lefranc, and Aurélie Maurin.

La Mer gelée primarily gathers unpublished texts, namely excerpts from novels, short stories, poems and poetic prose as well as essays of a philosophical, sociological and political nature as well as drawings and photographs. The importance of the texts in the Critique or Essay categories is decreasing, as is graphic work, so that the magazine is now concentrating on literary prose and poetry. All text contributions are printed in two languages, in German and in French. Since 2004, La mer gelée has been organizing festivals and readings in Germany and France with authors, filmmakers, visual artists and musicians, where the project's bilingualism is always an important aesthetic element.

In the course of its publication, the magazine published texts by Gilles Amalvi, Pierre Bergounioux, Antoine Brea, Nina Bußmann , Arno Calleja, Ann Cotten , Daniela Dröscher , Alfred Döblin, Elke Erb , Hans Fallada , Jean-Pierre Faye , Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt , Johannes Jansen , Elfriede Jelinek , Thomas Jonigk , Odile Kennel , Alban Lefranc, Christophe Manon, Serge Pey, Christian Prigent , Patrick Quillier, Monika Rinck , Jayrome C. Robinet, Jean-Marc Rouillan, Yoko Tawada , Chrétien de Troyes , Andres Veiel , Ron Winkler , Jacob Wren and Ron Winkler.

In an interview with the online magazine Diacritik, the editorial team outlined its approach as follows: “ La mer gelée emerged from the free, international collaboration of men and women who want to cure a widespread disease: literature. And there is, as is well known, only one antidote: literature. ”The online magazine En attendant Nadeau welcomed the MAMA issue with the words:“ The stirring voices and the remarkable typographic design combined create a visual, aural and literary shock. ”

A bilingual magazine (German-French)

One of the main features of the internationalist literary magazine La Mer gelée is that all texts are published in both German and French, and sometimes in other languages ​​(English, Old French, etc.). La Mer gelée thus follows the same approach as alba (German-Spanish), FRACAS (French-Spanish) and Widma (Polish-American) (list without claim to be exhaustive). This is possible thanks to a network of translators, including Bernard Banoun (ed.), Christian Driesen, Rüdiger Fischer, Claudia Hamm , Andreas Jandl, Odile Kennel, Alban Lefranc (ed.), Olivier Le Lay, Aurélie Maurin (ed.) and Katja Roloff.

In an interview, Alban Lefranc puts the magazine under the sign of a quote from Emmanuel Hocquard : "If the current trend is towards general coloring, the translation can create more blank spots on the map."
