Christian Prigent (born September 12, 1945 in Saint-Brieuc ) is a French writer , experimental poet and literary critic .

Life

Christian Prigent was born in Saint-Brieuc in 1945. From 1967 to 2005 he worked as a secondary school teacher for literature . In 1977 he received his doctorate with Roland Barthes at the University of Paris VIII with a dissertation on the poetics of Francis Ponge . After stays in Rome (1978–1980) and Berlin (1985–1991), he has lived in his birthplace in Brittany since 2007 .

Due to the breadth and diversity of his work, Christian Prigent has become a central figure in France's literary avant-garde since the 1960s . As a poet and theorist , he closely followed the literary developments of his time. With reference to Jacques Lacan , he uncompromisingly demands a letter that has to open to the real outside of him .

For example, in the context of the journal Tel Quel published by Philippe Sollers from 1960 to 1982 , which was a platform for post-structuralist thought, he founded the Revue TXT in 1969 with Jean-Luc Steinmetz , which he directed until 1993. From 1977 it was flanked by a series of the same name in which he published works by authors considered difficult or subversive, including a. Valère Novarina , Welimir Chlebnikow , Philippe Muray , Jean-Pierre Verheggen or Christian Prigent himself.

In 1996 he founded the literary magazine Fusées together with the painter Mathias Pérez , whom he had met in 1981 during a stay in the Villa Medici (Rome) . In contrast to TXT, it no longer propagated a break with literary conventions , but reflected the legacy of the literary avant-garde, whereby here too the focus was on new spellings by representatives of the new literary generation such as Charles Pennequin .

Prigent also worked on numerous other literary magazines in France and abroad. His most important books are published by the Paris publishing house POL , including volumes of poetry, fictional texts and essays critical of literature . Part of his self-image as an author are his performative public readings , including on the opening evening of the 2015 International Poetry Festival at the Berlin Academy of the Arts .

In German-speaking countries, texts by Prigent have only appeared sporadically in magazines such as Zwischen den Linien , Schreibheft and La mer gelée . It wasn't until 2014 that the only single publication translated into German was published.

style

As an author and essayist, Prigent competes against any kind of uniformization of literary language, against what he calls the “ collectivization of experience , of the unconscious , of styles ”. Literature must dispense with all stereotypes and, in speaking, build on the singular experience of one's own body. He is not afraid to provoke argumentative and ironic in his fight against the "parler faux" ( German wrong speaking) . What creates popularity is "the use of a dead - academic and uniformed - language". On the other hand, he demands more than “small stylistic deviations, scandals , paradoxes for television discussions - that is the 'moderate indecency' today, without which there is no modernist alibi ”, but a different kind of “indecency”: “Writing is something different: that absolute indecency, that which is inappropriate and makes brutal eccentricity a law. ”Stylistically, he continues the influential tradition of the poésie sonore (literally: sound poetry) of Bernard Heidsiek , which is understood more comprehensively in France than in the German-speaking area designated phonetic poetry ( French poésie phonétique). Astounding combinations of sounds, word interleaving and metaphors characterize his style as well as the entanglement of discourses and the deconstruction and reinterpretation of classical authors.
