Poetry Festival Berlin
Every year poets and artists from all over the world meet for the Poetry Festival Berlin - spelling: poesiefestival berlin - which presents poetry in a primarily performative way for around nine days at central locations in Berlin. The festival, founded in 2000 and funded by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds together with private sponsors, is organized by the Haus für Poesie (formerly Literaturwerkstatt Berlin). The Akademie der Künste is a cooperation partner and has been the main venue for the festival since 2008.

"To free ourselves from our blockages in dealing with poetry and to reorganize the oldest cultural technique of mankind its place in society is the concern of the Berlin Poetry Festival"
For this purpose, poetry is presented as a performative art form that merges with music and film. Organizer Thomas Wohlfahrt is attempting in this way to develop poetry as an "own and independent art form alongside literature".
“The festival lives especially from the concentrated encounter with the lyrical works of domestic and foreign poets, from the public exchange between the authors, from the discussion with the interested and open-minded Berlin audience. The motto of the opening is the program: Weltklang! "
The festival, founded in 2000, is well established in the poetry scene and has a cross-generation audience. So far, 8,000 to 12,000 visitors have come to the events each year. Up to 150 poets from numerous countries perform their works and discuss with the audience as well as with scholars and artist colleagues. The art of poetry is to be made accessible to a wide audience through innovative event formats and multimedia presentations. The poetry festival also functions as a working meeting for authors and as a translation workshop.
The festival aims to create closeness to the audience in an unconventional way. In the opening event Weltklang - Night of Poetry , established poets from all over the world read - without translation - from the original versions of their works, thereby allowing the sound of their poetry to affect the audience. The main themes of the festival are discussed in the colloquia . In the Poet's Corner the audience holds poetry talks with the artists in many places in Berlin. As part of the Versschmuggel workshop , poets are given the opportunity to “smuggle” their poems into the language of the other. In the literature market , poetic literature can be purchased in the open air. There is a special program for children and young people on the subject of poetry. Exhibitions and concerts as well as performance artists complete the program.
On the initiative of the House of Poetry, authors of the poetry festival have been making original versions of their poems spoken by themselves available at Lyrikline.org since October 2014 . Over 1,300 poets recite more than 12,000 poems in 80 languages. Lyrikline also provides around 20,000 translations. In 2001, Lyrikline was awarded the "Year of Dialogue Between Cultures" logo by the United Nations.
In 2010 UNESCO granted the festival its patronage. On June 4, 2010, it was awarded the Land of Ideas Prize .
First decade
2002
The poetry festival is described as a balancing act: "Here the 'young savages', there the sound poets and in the middle those who go about their work in a conventional way".
2003
The Australian dancers Legs on the Wall and the music ensemble Mara! opened the festival with the performance Homeland . A poem by Stefan Kozuharov, which tells the story of migration, of a life in limbo, served as a template. During the performance, a man stood on the roof of a prefabricated building. It looked like he was going to jump. A choir started and the man left. He prances down the facade of the house, almost floating. Images of passports and border crossings, of children with fear in their eyes, were projected onto the house wall.
In the Weltklang - Nacht, Henri Chopin, who was born in Paris in 1922 and died in 2008, performed “as the conductor and concertmaster of his electrically amplified body orchestra”. Inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's birth of tragedy out of the spirit of music , he saw the dawn of an audio-visual age that ended the Judeo-Christian era.
2007
On the occasion of the opening of the festival in Berlin's Rotes Rathaus, authors and literary organizers presented their concept of a “center for poetry”. It should be a meeting place for poets, publishers, the media and the public. This action was aimed at Minister of State for Culture Bernd Neumann. The director of the poetry festival, Thomas Wohlfahrt, said, “The decline in lyric editions in the print sector can be described as dramatic. German poetry hardly ever takes place internationally today ”.
2008
“Here they hang out, in this wonderful landscape architecture complex, the smaller cultural operators of the city. And the many poets. You've been carted here with all your poetry. 150 pieces this time. What attitude do you think they have? Weltschmerz, arrogance, a disability disguised as megalomania? "
Innovative event formats carry the risk of failure. If old poetry is mixed with old electronic music, something new would only appear to come out: "Poetry swindlers talk about boundaries being exceeded and are subject to a misunderstanding, because minus and minus do not result in plus."
At the end of the festival, international graffiti artists sprayed their interpretation of poems - right next to the texts handwritten by the poets - on the facade of the former department store building in Berlin-Lichtenberg. Under the motto Poems from the Spray Can , 19 poets made their texts available, including Monika Rinck and Jan Wagner . The sprayer Tokyoe interpreted Bas Böttcher's poem Freedom in the Square as origami cranes. “They are also folded from square paper. It's nice when a text takes on a life of its own in this way, ”said the poet.
During the panel discussion, Thomas Wohlfahrt repeated his suggestion for a “center for poetry”. The question of whether Berlin, where “the density of poets is densest”, needs a center for poetry was largely answered in the affirmative. Only the representative of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung was skeptical: "If publishers, critics and readings fail to win over more lyric readers, then it is because the poetry, to speak with Gottfried Benn, is a 'shining marginal phenomenon'" .
2009
Under the motto “Along the Zambezi”, different forms of poetry - gospel, performance poetry and agitative poetry - from four languages as well as the “Portrait of Johannesburg” were presented. Among the artists were the songwriter Jackson Kaujeua , the performer Keamogetsi Joseph Molapong, the poet and freedom fighter Jack Mapanje from Malawi and the poet Moffat Moyo, as well as Keorapetse Kgositsile from South Africa , the Imbongi (praise poet) Zolani Mkiva, the spoken word poet Kgafela oa Magogodi, the rapper Iain Gregory Robinson aka Ewok and the poet Phillippa Yaa de Villiers. A concert by Chiwoniso Maraire from Zimbabwe rounded off the Africa Day.
The participants of the colloquium dealt with the “bulky beauty” of the poem. The poet Monika Rinck took the view that the poem is no more difficult or impenetrable than the rest of our present day. Nevertheless, more and more - especially small - publishers are taking poetry out of their range under severe financial pressure. A publishing director said: "The phenomenon of the bestseller does not exist in poetry."
Second decade
2010
The main topic of the Mediterranean, together with migration, moved political poets into the focus of interest. The poet Jazra Khaleed showed how much the fate of the refugees was on his mind. "Poetry means attack," he said and:
"I'm a monster, a terrorist, I'm a hooded man"
At the end of his lecture, he tore up his manuscript pages and threw them on the floor. The photo exhibition The Lives of Others by Lucas Gambi was dedicated to the life and working conditions of the many migrants who work on Italian construction sites. "The theme of poetry is life," said the Italian writer Amir Or. This perspective can help to understand the linguistic violence of political poets.
2012
The Syria theme day began with a conversation about bread, hashish and the moon - a poem by the Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani , who died in 1998 and has great significance for Arab culture. In view of the escalating violence in Syria, the interpretation of the poet Nouri Jarah, who lives in British exile, was erratic and bloodless and the critic Subhi Hadidi, who fled to France, took refuge in a good lecture on Syrian literary history. A poetry conversation did not unfold. The chance for deeper insights beyond the daily political events had been wasted.

At Poet's Corner, 30 poets read from their poems at special locations such as the Körnerpark in Neukölln and the Wagenburg Lohmühle in Treptow. It was criticized that in the audience there were mainly foreign poetry lovers, so that the readings had nothing to do with the idea of Poet's Corner. The organizer of the festival would like "that the poems should go out into the neighborhood, among people who otherwise have nothing to do with poetry".
In the Versschmuggel workshop , six Brazilian and six German poets met to translate one poem into the language of the other. The results have been published in a bilingual anthology. One of the criteria by which the Brazilian poets were selected was the fact that their works had not yet been translated into German. In addition, the experiment was dared that the poets did not master the language into which their works were translated. During the workshop, an interpreter made rough translations, on the basis of which the poems could be rewritten.
2013
Leopold von Verschuer staged the performance of Wolfgang Hilbig's long poem “Prosa Meine Heimatstrasse”. This work is considered difficult to understand. For the writer Uwe Kolbe , the text has the character of a stock cube. This evening was best where he succeeded in "leaving the high theater tone behind and actually questioning the text in a kind of thought exercise".
2014
It was investigated how quickly poetry reacts to social disruptions such as armed conflicts and civil disobedience. The time span ranged from the First World War to the battles at Gezi Park and in Ukraine. In the First World War, poetic mobilization functioned as a kind of social media, said the Dutch literary scholar Geert Buelens. Street Art Poetry told of the fascination of new beginnings, of disillusionment and horror. Baris Atay Mengülü concluded that the poem is more responsive than the film or the prose.
Poets and philosophers exchanged their thoughts when the night of philosophy was a guest at the poetry market . There were lectures, performances, videos, films and music. The opening lectures held:

2015
The poetry festival opened the exhibitions Aufs Maul - With Luther into the world of words and the sound installation Joy . The 16th event was dedicated to Chinese poetry. At the colloquium “How not to speak. Poetry and Subversion in China ”, the poet Liao Yiwu , who lives in exile in Berlin, met authors who publish in the People's Republic. During the discussion, Yiwu got the impression that “the lyric poets living in China are obviously more interesting” than himself. After the moderator criticized the perception of authors in exile in the West as one-sided, he left the podium and almost caused a scandal. The translation workshop Versschmuggel was dedicated to German, Dutch and Flemish poets.

2016
Poetic thinking broadens the view of current global conflicts: What kind of world is this in which we live and will live - in the face of wars, impoverishment and flight? The Colloquium gave space for literatures of flight and looked for a language for flight.
2017
The festival demonstrated the poetic examination of the shaky European Union and gave a positive example of the European values of diversity, cosmopolitanism, freedom of art and freedom of thought. The Scottish author John Burnside elaborated on this idea in the Berlin Poetry Speech, because poetry can “achieve anything from compassion to free thinking to decision-making in relation to social and political change (of course poetry cannot change society , we have to do that ourselves, but it can provide us with food that strengthens us in this task). "
2018
The festival focused on poetry as a moral compass. “Information must become knowledge; it has to move from the head to the heart. Only such knowledge can inspire action, ”explained the Caribbean poet Kendal Hippolyte at the world climate summit for poetry. The conceptual artist Ai Weiwei and the poet Yang Lian from China gave uncomfortable answers to the question of winners and losers in globalization.
2019
The festival defended itself against the fouling of language and discourse, hate speech and fake news with poetic resistance. The Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben spoke in the forum of "bilingualism" from dialect and high-level language as a poetic dimension. The focus of the country was on the USA: in the case of the VERS smuggling, American and German poets translated for each other. In the Berlin poetry speech, the Argentine poet Sergio Raimondi "criticized globalization in verse" and thus responded to Adorno's demand for poetry at the height of capitalism: "Such modernity must be able to cope with high industrialism, not simply treat it." On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprisings, poets from the LGBTQI * scene discussed the importance of Stonewall for future generations and the role of poetry in the struggle for recognition and equality.
