Uwe Kolbe (born October 17, 1957 in East Berlin ) is a German poet , prose writer and translator .

Life

In 1976 Kolbe passed his Abitur . In the same year, through the mediation of Franz Fühmann, his first texts were published in the literary magazine Sinn und Form . After completing basic military service in the NVA , he was, according to the Norddeutscher Zeitung, a theater painter , transport worker and warehouse manager. He practiced the latter at Aufbau-Verlag in Berlin.

Kolbe had been a freelance writer since September 1979. In the first few years he earned his living alongside the publication of his own works with readings, revisions and translations for various GDR publishers. The first volume of poetry Hineingeboren was published in 1980 by Aufbau-Verlag. In 1980/81 he completed a special course at the "Johannes R. Becher" literature institute .

It was thanks to Franz Fühmann's personal guarantee that Kolbe was able to hold a reading in the West Berlin authors' bookstore on April 20, 1982 . In the anthology Inventory 2. Debutants 1976 - 1980 published in 1981 there is a text by Kolbe with the title Core of My Novel , which is an acrostic and contains a hidden message in capital letters. Reading these, sentences such as "Your dimensions are miserable" and "You mighty old men tear up the daily revolution" emerge. After a reader discovered and reported this in the book recommended by literary propagandists, the anthology had to be removed from bookstore displays and libraries instructed to keep it under lock and key. An anthology of young authors prepared by Uwe Kolbe and Sascha Anderson at the suggestion of Fühmann and on behalf of the Akademie der Künste was subsequently not realized.

In other respects, too, Kolbe , who criticized the GDR's cultural policy, was actually prohibited from publishing in the early 1980s. From August 1982 to 1985/86 he was only able to present his work in denominational institutions or in private rooms. And spread in writing only in various underground magazines . After all, in 1983 he was able to accept a translation assignment from the Henschel publishing house for Federico García Lorca's stage works. From 1982 three of his volumes of poetry, Hineingeboren , Abschiede and Bornholm II , were also published by Suhrkamp in the Federal Republic. From 1985, relaxed restrictions allowed Kolbe to stay abroad in Switzerland, the Netherlands and West Germany. While other authors from the Prenzlauer Berg scene were unable to do so , he was able to accompany Gerhard Wolf on a lecture tour to Vienna . In 1986 he received a permanent visa for the Federal Republic.

From 1983 to 1987 he edited the non-official literary magazine Mikado together with Bernd Wagner and Lothar Trolle .

At times, Uwe Kolbe was observed by the GDR Ministry for State Security . His father Ulrich Kolbe was employed by the Stasi as a command officer for unofficial employees .

In 1988 Kolbe moved to Hamburg . In 1989 he was given a visiting professorship in Austin / Texas , where he witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall from afar . In addition to literary topics, he has now also reported on historical issues for print media and at conferences. In 1993 he returned to Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg.

In 1996 he resigned from the PEN Center of the Federal Republic of Germany in protest against the association with the German PEN Center (East). From 1997 to spring 2004 he was head of the literature and theater studio at the University of Tübingen , which resulted in a move there. A stay in South Korea in 2000 gave rise to another translation task and a scholarship holder in Bulgaria in 2001 bore fruit in the form of new poems and the first detective novel, which appeared in 2005.

After a time in Berlin as a freelance writer with diverse international activities and functions (he describes his participation in the International Poetry Festival Medellín 2010 as particularly moving ), Kolbe has been living in Hamburg again since 2013. He is a member of the Free Academy of the Arts in Leipzig . His son, born in 1979, is active as a rapper in the Berlin hip-hop scene under the stage name Mach One .
