Iva Bittová (born July 22, 1958 in Bruntál ) is a Czech singer, actress and violinist. She became internationally known as a musician through the documentary about Fred Frith Step Across the Border (1990), in which she can be seen together with Pavel Fajt .

life and work

Her father Koloman Bitto, a Roma of Slovak-Hungarian origin, played guitar, trumpet and bass in classical and folk ensembles. Her mother is the Jewish singer Ludmila Bittová (née Masařová). Her sister is the singer and musician Ida Kelarová that the group Romanó Council has established.

As a child of a musical family, Bittová received ballet and violin lessons at a young age. Later she studied acting, singing, violin (with Rudolf Šťastný) and composition. As a child, she played various roles in Czech films and television productions. In the early 1980s she devoted herself more and more to music and developed her own singing and violin style. Their music takes on very heterogeneous influences. Between jazz , avant-garde , Moravian folklore and classical songwriting, she is looking for new ways of expression, in which her variable, delicate to penetrating voice is always in the foreground. She gained international recognition in the 1990s and has since performed regularly in Europe, the USA and Japan.

The English avant-garde musician Fred Frith dedicated his 1st string quartet "Lelekovice" (1990) to her. She is successful as a soloist. In addition, she has u. a. worked with Hamid Drake , Marc Ribot , David Krakauer , Don Byron , Tom Cora , Phil Minton , David Moss , George Mraz , Jaromír Honzák and Bill Frisell .

In addition to her musical career, Bittová continued to work as an actress. In 2003 she played the role of Zena in the feature film Zelary , which was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film in 2004 .

Iva Bittová has two sons and lived with them for a long time in Lelekovice , a village near Brno . In 2007 she moved to the USA and has since lived in Rhinebeck , New York .
