David Moss (born January 21, 1949 in New York City ) is an American percussionist , vocalist , improvisation musician , composer and organizer of musical performance projects . He has lived in Berlin since 1991 .

Life and artistic creation

David Moss began his musical education with a percussion study from 1963 to 1968 at the Hartt School of Music and 1969 to 1970 at Wesleyan University . In 1970 he graduated in Russian history at Trinity College with the degree Bachelor of Arts. From 1971 to 1973 he studied composition with Bill Dixon at Bennington College .

Since 1973 David Moss has appeared worldwide as a percussionist and vocal artist in solo concerts or in collaboration with orchestras , music and theater ensembles . Since the mid-1970s he has been a central figure in New Improvisation Music , Art Rock and Noise Music . In his solo performances he combines live electronics and his idiosyncratic set of drums with artistic vocal interludes.

In 1991 Moss received a DAAD scholarship and moved to Berlin. Since then he has been working increasingly with composers such as Heiner Goebbels , orchestras and theater ensembles and has appeared as a soloist in numerous opera productions , music theater productions , orchestral concerts and festivals , including the Ensemble Modern , the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie , the Ensemble intercontemporain , the Arditti Quartet , the Klangforum Wien , the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Musiktheater Ohrpilot and the Berlin Philharmonic . He is co-founder and artistic director of the Institute for Living Voice , a workshop center for outstanding singers and vocal musicians in Berlin. With Paul Dutton , Koichi Makigami, Phil Minton and Jaap Blonk he founded the group Five Men Singing , which performed at the festival in Victoriaville .

In 2001 he was seen at the Salzburg Festival as Prince Orlovsky in the controversial staging of the bat by Hans Neuenfels .
