Frank Schulte (born September 25, 1962 in Hagen ) is a German sound and media artist.

Life

Frank Schulte has been working on composed and improvised scenic music together with performance artists, dancers, actors and writers since the early 1990s. He composes music for scenic productions. He experiments with new sound generation techniques. He designs sounds and soundtracks for film and television and develops his own conceptual intermedia projects.

From the European musical tradition of "musique concrète", sound installation and in connection with the new dance culture, he develops noise stories, "songlines" and "dreamscapes" and music for films of the subconscious in a personal language. He designed intermedia events such as Switchbox and Electronic Lounge , in which his selection of sound arts, “ambient” and improvised music as well as elements from the electronic music scene are closely connected.

He has a longstanding artistic partnership with Dirk Raulf , saxophonist and composer from Cologne. From 1995 to 1997 Schulte & Raulf conceived and realized the event series “Teatime” with artist contributions from the fields of literature, visual arts as well as contemporary and improvised music. In 1995 they founded the label "Poise". In addition, they worked together in various contemporary, thematic concert projects such as the Friedrich Holländer music project "From head to foot" (1996). This was followed by joint work on theater and film music and in the artist collective "membran". In 2006 Schulte & Raulf formed the duo sonargemeinschaft . In December 2007 the duo worked with the English guitarist Fred Frith and gave concerts in Cologne's Loft . The live recording of this trio performance was titled drift . Released in 2008 on "Poise" as CD.

Further collaboration took place with David Moss , Jon Rose , David Shea , Yoshihide Otomo , Anna Homler, Thomas Heberer , Christian Marclay , Phil Minton , Sussan Deyhim, Dirk Raulf , Lorenzo Brusci, Kalle Laar , Andres Bosshard , Lauren Newton and Bojan Vuletic .

Frank Schulte developed music for the theaters in Bonn, Düsseldorf, Weimar, Essen, Oberhausen and St. Gallen.

He held project seminars in 2002 and 2004 at the Art Academy for Media, Cologne (KHM) and in 2007 as part of the Sound Space Garden project at the International School of Design, Cologne (KISD).

Schulte was involved in the conception, planning and implementation of music presentations such as the Minifestival Düsseldorf, electric trick, as well as theme evenings and salons such as the Club Orchidee or Teatime and cross-disciplinary series of events such as 4b, electronic lounge, Tonspur and aufbau WEST.
