WERGO is a German record label that was founded in 1962 by the art historian Werner Goldschmidt and the musicologist Helmut Kirchmeyer ( en ) , specializing in new music .

In 1970 WERGO was taken over by the music publisher Schott . Since then, over 500 productions have been released. Since 1986, WERGO has published the Edition Zeitgenössische Musik series in collaboration with the German Music Council , which presents the works of young German composers.

WERGO also works with the Acoustic Art Studio of the WDR in Cologne (WERGO series: Ars Acustica ) and the Center for Art and Media Technology Karlsruhe (WERGO series: Edition ZKM ). Together with the Berlin House of World Cultures and the Music Department of the Ethnological Museum in Berlin, WERGO is committed to world music . The Digital Music Digital series publishes computer music publications . As part of the Natural Sounds series , the biologist Walter Tilgner has published a series of CDs with so-called natural hearing images in artificial head stereophony - beginning with Waldkonzert (1985) .
