Music Unlimited Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Music Unlimited Festival is an international festival for jazz and improvised music that takes place annually in the old slaughterhouse in Wels . For ORF it is the “Mecca for all friends of experimental music”.

history

The festival first took place in November 1987 and was named "Music Unlimited" at the suggestion of the musician and musicologist Gunther Schneider. In the early years, contemporary improvising and composing currents were juxtaposed and the so-called third-stream movement was also discussed as a way of resolving this apparent contradiction. At that time, the New York downtown music scene around John Zorn , Bill Frisell and Elliott Sharp , which characterizes this openness in approach , was particularly decisive for the content of the festival .

Every other year since 1991, the festival has been curated by a musician under a theme chosen by him. The three-day festival is organized annually by the cultural association Waschaecht in cooperation with musicians. So far, almost 1,000 musicians have played in 500 bands and formations, from solo projects to 25-piece orchestras. Contemporary music is presented beyond familiar listening and sound habits: "From chamber music to techno , everything is allowed that is outside the mainstream." Important guests and companions of the festival are all curators and especially artists such as Clive Bell , Ken Vandermark , John Zorn , Evan Parker , Peter Brötzmann , Fred Frith , Mats Gustafsson , Satoko Fujii , Kent Kessler , Christof Kurzmann , Carla Kihlstedt , Lotte Anker and Okkyung Lee or bands like Shellac , Dälek , Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and The Ex .

The festival also presents a number of free concerts every year and is considered highly praised in the international music scene; Visitors not only come from the region, but are also attracted internationally.
