Live and act

Some of Carla Kihlstedt's ancestors are of Swedish descent; the actress Rya Kihlstedt is her older sister. She started playing the violin at an early age and underwent classical training at the Peabody Institute , Oberlin and the San Francisco Conservatory . In Oberlin she developed an interest in improvisation and contemporary music . In 1997 she founded the Tin Hat Trio together with Rob Burger and Mark Orton , which - expanded - then became Tin Hat . She also became a member of the Charming Hostess , 2 Foot Yard , Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Causing a Tiger groups , each with a different style and concept. In 2010 she performed as a duo with the pianist Satoko Fujii at the Jazz Festival Saalfelden .

Kihlstedt wrote music for theater and ballet ensembles, but also for the Rova Saxophone Quartet ( Pandæmonium ). Composers like Lisa Bielawa , Michael Fiday and Jorge Liderman have composed works for them. Fred Frith brought her into his group Cosa Brava . She also worked with John Zorn , Mr. Bungle , Tom Waits , Gino Robair , Jenny Scheinman , Dan Rathbun and above all her husband Matthias Bossi. She plays with Bossi in almost all of the aforementioned formations and has formed various song-oriented duo projects with him over the years.

While some of their albums had previously been released without a record deal and were produced and distributed themselves, Kihlstedt and Bossi have been using Rabbit Rabbit Radio since the beginning of 2012, a consistent internet presentation that also offers subscriptions to monthly pieces that are combined with video clips that they also produce themselves . In addition to their main instruments, violin and drums, they both sing and play all other instruments themselves. Occasionally there are guest musicians (more often Jon Evans ( Tori Amos ) on bass and guitar or even Tony Levin ).

Kihlstedt teaches at the New England Conservatory . In 2007 she curated the Music Unlimited Festival in Wels .

In 2015 she won the Down Beat Critic Polls in the Rising Star category.
