Charming Hostess is an American band whose origins lie in the experimental rock music scene in Oakland .
The current formation with three singers emerged from the Charming Hostess Big Band in 2002 . In this composition, gender-specific conventions were caricatured at appearances - the female members often appeared with glued-on beards, while the male members wore skirts. The music is mainly based on traditional chants from Eastern Europe and North Africa mixed with American folk , doo wop , rock and klezmer .
