Tin Hat (initially Tin Hat Trio ) is a only slightly electrically amplified fusion band that operates from San Francisco . She performs an undogmatic crossover of jazz, country, blues, bluegrass and folk , with influences from klezmer , classical music and rock music . The “breathtaking virtuosity and limitless love for improvisation” make the sound of the group “surprisingly close to jazz ”.

history

Accordionist Rob Burger and guitarist Mark Orton completed a classical music degree at the Juilliard School ; Burger then worked in jazz. After meeting the violinist Carla Kihlstedt at a summer camp, they moved to San Francisco to work as a trio from there. At the end of 2004, Burger left the band, which then toured as a quartet with Ben Goldberg and guest Zeena Parkins. In the summer of 2005, the band grew to Ara Anderson, who had previously accompanied Tom Waits . Rob Reich has now taken his place.

The debut album Memory Is an Elephant , released in 1999, received critical acclaim: "Such an original hybrid of jazz, folklore and chamber music had not been heard since the early Oregon ." The band also drew guest soloists such as Tom Waits and for the next albums Willie Nelson approach. The Sad Machinery of Spring dealt with the life of Bruno Schulz . The album The Rain Is a Handsome Animal contains a 17-part song cycle with lyrics by EE Cummings , to which all four members of the band contributed compositions.

Her song Fear of the South became part of the score for Everything is Enlightened in 2005 . In 2013, Mark Orton brought the trio in its original line-up to record the score for the Oscar-nominated film Nebraska ; The piece "Bill" , which was initially recorded for the album The Rodeo Eroded , was also used.
