Live and act
Tilbury got to know the composers Manfred Niehaus and Cornelius Cardew during his military service in Cologne-Ossendorf . As a scholarship holder of the Royal College of Music , he studied piano with Arthur Alexander and James Gibb . He deepened his studies with Zbigniew Drzewiecki in Warsaw, where he founded the Warsaw Music Workshop Group ("Warsztat Muzyczny") with Zygmunt Krauze . In 1968 Tilbury won the Gaudeamus competition for new music in the Netherlands and specialized in the interpretation of new music . Internationally he presented works by Earle Brown , John Cage , Cardew, Morton Feldman , Michael Parson , Terry Riley , Terry Jennings and Christian Wolff at relevant festivals (including Warsaw Autumn , Glasgow Musica Nova, Venice Biennale ) . With his recordings of these works he set standards for the interpretation of contemporary piano music.
Tilbury was a member of the Scratchorchestra founded by Cardew, Parson and Howard Skempton around 1970 . He is also considered a master pianist in the field of new improvisation music: he has been a member of the AMM improvisation ensemble since 1980 . With Keith Rowe electroacoustic ensemble M.IMEO he has The Hands of Caravaggio received that relates 1,602 suggestions from a painting by the artist from the year.
In recent years, Tilbury has also appeared as an actor ( Samuel Beckett , Harold Pinter ). He also writes musicological analyzes, for example on the Scratch Orchestra in the early 1970s. In 2008 his biography about Cornelius Cardew, A Life Unfinished was published .
