Marcus Schmickler

Marcus Schmickler (born November 15, 1968 in Cologne ) is a German composer, musician and producer. As a musician, he is also known under the pseudonym Pluramon .

He is the son of an industrial clerk and a baker's daughter. His parents soon moved to Kürten , where he got to know the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen as a child . In 1991, after a year-long stay in London, he began studying musicology in Cologne and became a member of the Kontakta ensemble. In 1992 his first solo release appeared on the French label Odd Size. In 1995 he co-initiated the record shop a-Musik and the DJ collective Brussels-Platz-10a-Musik with Georg Odijk and Jan St. Werner ( Mouse on Mars ).

In 1996 he released one of the first fully digitally produced post-rock albums on the Mille Plateaux label under the pseudonym Pluramon . In 1998, after a concert in Cologne, he became a member of the 12-member electro-acoustic ensemble MIMEO (Music in Movement Electronic Orchestra) under the direction of Keith Rowe . In 1999 he completed his studies in electronic music with Hans Ulrich Humpert and composition with Johannes Fritsch with a thesis on Gottfried Michael Koenig . Since then he has also worked as a composer in the fields of film, theater and radio plays.

In 2000 he published the CD Bart together with Thomas Lehn , which has the reputation among experts for being one of the most impressive synthesizer improv performances. A long-term musical collaboration ensues with Lehn.

In September 2001 he recorded the Pluramon album Dreams Top Rock with the American singer Julee Cruise and in 2003, on the initiative of the Goethe Institute, went on a tour of South America ( Argentina , Bolivia , Brazil , Colombia , Peru , Venezuela ).

Since 2004 he has been working on theater projects with Felix Ensslin, among others . Numerous works of electronic music as well as compositions for choir, chamber ensemble and orchestra are created. In 2009 he composed on behalf of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 and the German Music Council Bonner Durchmusterung , electronic music with projections on the basis of astrophysical data and named after the star catalog Bonner Durchmusterung .

Marcus Schmickler has received prizes and grants, among others from Ars Electronica , the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and curated festival programs at the Academy of Arts and the ZKM . He was a long-time jury member of the German Music Council . He has also taught at the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, New York. As a writer, he has written articles on various topics in electronic music.
