Kompakt is an internationally successful record label for electronic music from Cologne .

The label also includes a record shop on Werderstrasse in Cologne, a sales department and an artist agency .

history

Kompakt goes back to a record store that was founded on March 1st, 1993 (still under the name Delirium ) by Wolfgang Voigt together with his brother Reinhard Voigt , Jörg Burger and Jürgen Paape . At the beginning of 1998 this was renamed to Kompakt and the label of the same name was founded as a summary of various already existing smaller labels ( Profan , Studio 1 ).

Today the owners are Wolfgang Voigt, Jürgen Paape and Michael Mayer .

style

Jürgen Paape - Triumph; Catalog # KOM1 (1998)

Kompakt was and is internationally associated with a certain variety of minimal techno , which many media have called the Sound of Cologne . Although a wide variety of styles of electronic music are now appearing on Kompakt - from abstract, experimental tracks to vocal pieces with Schlager elements ( Justus Köhncke ) - Kompakt still sees itself as a techno label (Wolfgang Voigt in an interview in 2003: 51% on Techno has to be compact. Otherwise, whatever pleases is allowed. ).

The label's claim is to make innovative and polarizing music and still have economic success; especially with records where the point is to be right, not to sell , as Voigt once said. Despite the joy of experimentation, value is also placed on functional dance music and DJs as the buyer target group, which was promoted by the weekly party series Total Confusion in the Cologne club Studio 672 , which the Kompakt co-owner Michael Mayer together as a DJ from 1998 to June 30, 2006 Tobias Thomas operated. The party series took place monthly at Kölner Bogen 2 until November 2014. Most releases are still on vinyl , CDs often combine a number of previously released maxis. The corporate identity of Kompakt came from the long-term companion Bianca Strauch , who now lives and works in Hamburg after several stays abroad.
