Microhouse

Microhouse is a variant of minimal house and therefore belongs to house music.

The term microhouse was coined in 2001 by Philip Sherbourne in his The Wire article "The Rules of Reduction" (July issue, no. 209). It describes a primarily German variety of minimal house that reduces Chicago House to the threefold essence of rhythm, soul and silence, as Sherbourne writes. Sound surfaces are largely dispensed with. Various rhythmic elements such as kick drum and hi-hat are often replaced by ultra-short samples , samples that are beyond the limits of what is recognizable. They come not only from the DJs' record and CD archives, but also from malfunctions in the equipment ( glitches such as scratching, hissing, clicking, distorting, etc.). If there are vocals, they are consequently reduced to minimal statements or even sentence fragments. All samples are used rhythmically, so that only a framework remains of the house music. The analogy applies: Soul is to late James Brown as house is to microhouse.

Role models, influences

The most important role models come from the minimal house environment. They are: Richie Hawtin alias Plastikman, Mike Inks Studio 1 and M: I: 5 releases.

Labels

There are only a few pure microhouse labels: Force Tracks (Luomo, MRI), Perlon ( Ricardo Villalobos , Markus Nikolai, Pantytec) or Trapez ( Akufen , MIA). Many microhouse tracks have been published by established techno and techhouse labels such as Playhouse ( Isolée , Losoul ), Kompakt ( Sascha Funke , Michael Mayer ), Force Inc. Music Works , Force Tracks, hard disks or Klang Elektronik ( colors ). Several microhouse records were also released on the Frankfurt label Mille Plateaux .
