T.Raumschmiere is an Electropunk project by Marco Haas (* 1975), the founder of the Shitkatapult label. In the project, punk and noise sounds are combined with electro that can often be danced . The project's releases are generally not chartable commercial successes, but they have a major impact in the field of alternative electronic music . T. Raumschmiere was received far beyond the genre boundaries, for example by the Goethe Institute and the New York Times .

history

Before founding T. Raumschmiere and Shitkatapult, Marco Haas had already played drums in the hardcore punk band Zorn , but it wasn't until the late 1990s that more electronic publications came about. In 1997, Haas named himself after the short story Die Traumschmiere ( The Dream Cops ) by William S. Burroughs : “I happened to just read it when I was looking for a project name. So I put the period between T and R so that it looks like a name. "

The first releases appeared in 1997 on the Cozmick Suckerz Compilations and the Stormbow EP, which were also the first releases of the Shitkatapult label. Stormbow itself was still a rock-oriented band project, while the compilation contributions are electronic music. The first EP on Shitkatapult followed in 1999 with Stromschleifen . In the following years, T. Raumschmiere released at least two EPs or albums each year, some of which were also released on Hefty Records , Sender, Kompakt and Angorasteel.

In 2002, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle was a summary of previously released singles. The album received good reviews, for example the laut.de critic said : “That's how it has to be. Anarchy from Friedrichshain with that certain oomph. Please take cover! ”The following year, a new album, Radio Blackout, was released by novamute . In 2003 T. Raumschmiere was a guest at the Peel Sessions .

style

Some of T.Raumschmiere's pieces are instrumental, while in others the vocals play a central role. The lyrics are usually in English, even if many of the songs have German names. In the naming, on the one hand, the frequent reference to industrial terms such as "current loops", "rivet bolts" or "cross-flow clamps" is striking, and on the other hand there is an ironic component in the choice of name (such as "recently at the funeral discount", "we children from the electricity station") or "Patridiot").

The term Electropunk can be applied to the music of T. Raumschmieres without any problems, but it is itself rather a vague collective term for musicians who combine punk attitudes with electronic sounds. An ARTE documentary from 2003 portrayed T. Raumschmiere as the main representative of the “dirty electric”, a style that has not caught on. The fashionable term “ electroclash ” is also difficult to apply, although T. Raumschmiere occasionally works with typical representatives of this style such as Miss Kittin . In general, however, his music is more aggressive and unpretentious than that of electroclash artists such as Fischerspooner . When asked about his music style in the magazine de: Bug, Haas said : “[I] told Novamute from the start that I would not make a techno album because I do not want to be a techno artist and I do not want to be in either that corner wants to be pushed. [...] I do not know exactly. It's always so difficult to classify it in drawers or categories. "
