Marie-poupée (German: "Marie, the doll") is a French film drama with André Dussollier from 1976.

action

In a rural French town on the Dordogne in Charente-Maritime : 17-year-old Marie walks through the streets and stops in front of a doll's shop. Claude, the owner of the shop, sees her through the shop window and is immediately fascinated by her unusual beauty and her porcelain-like skin. He invites her to his castle-like villa to show her his doll collection. Shortly thereafter, Claude met Marie's grandparents, with whom Marie grew up after her parents' accidental death.

Marie, who believes she has found her dream prince in Claude, finally becomes his wife. In an inn where they are spending their wedding night, Claude gives his bride a pink dress that she is supposed to wear immediately with her black boots. He puts her on the bed and wants to play a game with her. Marie should lie down and close her eyes. While he is running water into the tub in the bathroom, he begins to undress it; first her boots, then her dress, and finally her stockings. When he's finished, Claude carries Marie into the bathroom and carefully washes her in the tub. Then he puts her back to bed and takes a bath himself. Meanwhile, Marie falls asleep.

When they return from their honeymoon, Claude Marie shows her room that he has set up for her in his house. From then on he dresses them like his dolls and pampers them as such. When Claude has to go on a business trip and Marie doesn't want to be alone in the big house, she temporarily stays with Claude's friends, Pierre and Ida Courtin. Marie takes a bath there. Ida, a doll maker, comes to her and, with Marie's permission, sits down with the girl in the tub. When Claude returns two days later, Marie is overjoyed to see him again. However, he is too tired to play their nightly game. Marie begins to cry, disappointed. She gets dressed and finally goes to Sergio, a servant who is about to shear the sheep.

When Claude brings his friends Marie-Paule and Georges with him one evening and Marie greets them dirty from the sheepfold, Claude gets angry. Marie runs away crying and goes to Sergio, where Claude finds her and apologizes to her. From then on Marie visits Sergio regularly and he tells her stories. Meanwhile, Claude stops all advances made by his wife, who increasingly longs for tenderness and physical contact. When he goes on a business trip again, he meets a little girl in his pension who is curiously looking at his dolls. Claude gives the little one a doll and puts it on his bed. He wants to play a game with her. She should close her eyes and not speak.

Marie, who almost only cries from loneliness, meanwhile goes to Sergio again. Charlot, an old friend, is with him and they drink together. At Sergio's nod, Marie sits down on his lap. He gives her a kiss and says goodbye to Charlot. Now that they are alone, Sergio Marie takes off the dress. When he notices that she is still a virgin, he suddenly attacks her wildly. Marie starts to fight back. When he penetrates her violently, Marie grabs a sharp tool and stabs him in the side. She runs away into the night rain. In the process, she hits the branch of a tree with her head and falls unconscious to the ground. When she comes to again, she sees Claude's splendid house.

A girl then walks down the street and stops in front of the doll shop. There is a doll in the shop window that looks like Marie. The seller tells the girl that many have already noticed how alive the doll looks. An old woman brought them over one day. However, he was not allowed to sell the doll because the woman's granddaughter died from being like a doll. The girl replies that she doesn't like dolls and leaves the shop.
