life and work
After studying literature in Grenoble with distinction , which he completed at the request of his parents, he decided at the age of 23 to pursue an acting career in Paris. At the Conservatory he received first prize (with Francis Perrin ) and in 1972 he retired from the Comédie-Française , which he left a few years later in favor of film and television. In the same year he made his film debut in the film A Beautiful Girl Like Me by François Truffaut (with Bernadette Lafont ), who saw him in Büchner's Leonce and Lena . In 1973 he starred in a lifetime of Claude Lelouch (on the side of Marthe Keller ). In particular, he also took on the role of seducer in other films by Nouvelle Vague directors such as Jacques Rivette ( Theater der Liebe , 1985), Éric Rohmer (e.g. Perceval le Gallois 1978, The beautiful wedding , 1982) and Claude Chabrol .
In 1982 he worked with Alain Resnais for the first time ( Life is a novel and 1984 in love to death ) - the beginning of a long-term collaboration. In 1985 he had a huge hit with Coline Serreau's comedy Three Men and a Baby . He received his first César nomination for his role in Mélo (1986) from Resnais. He won the award himself in 1993 for Ein Herz im Winter (1991) by Claude Sautet and in 1998 for Das Leben ist ein Chanson by Resnais as best male leading actor and twice as best supporting actor, in 2001 for The Officers Chamber by François Dupeyron and in 2000 for Ein Sommer auf dem Lande (1999) by Jean Becker . In 2002 he received the “Prix Plaisir du Théatre” for his life's work. Today he is considered one of the most respected French actors, both on stage and in film.
From 2001 to 2003 he designed and interpreted Monstres sacrés, sacrés monstres , a show with texts by Charles Baudelaire , Sacha Guitry , Victor Hugo , Molière and Jacques Prévert . For this he received a nomination for the most important French theater prize Molière in 2002 .
