Ruby & Quentin - The Killer and the Burdock (Original title: Tais-toi! - translated: Shut up!) Is a French comedy by Francis Veber from 2003.

action

Quentin, a lovable fool, is dominated by a compulsion to speak and drives all inmates of his prison cell insane. It ended up there after a clumsy bank robbery. Inspector Vernet comes up with the idea of locking up the professional gangster Ruby with Quentin. Ruby was arrested after a serious robbery of a money truck. He committed this crime in revenge for the murder of his girlfriend, committed by her husband, the criminal businessman Vogel. Ruby refuses to make any statement through consistent silence. With the help of the talkative, loyal Quentin from Montargis , who mentions his hometown at every opportunity, he is to be softened and lured from his reserve in order to lead the police on the trail of the murderer and the money. Quentin evaluates Ruby's permanent silence as an expression of friendly, patient listening and thus develops great affection for his new "friend".

Of course, both psychologists and the police fail. Ruby doesn't reveal anything; for this he can bribe a nurse to help him with his breakout - not realizing that Quentin also intends to flee, but with him! The two manage to escape through a simple plan with a crane. Ruby is obsessed with killing his lover's killer, and the police are after Vogel too. Quentin, on the other hand, is inspired by the idea of opening a bistro called “Bei den Zwei Freunde” with his new (and only) friend in a suburb of Paris .

After a long hunt, Quentin and Ruby hide in a shabby, abandoned bistro, which also serves as a shelter for an Albanian homeless person (she looks like Ruby's lover and therefore immediately touches his heart). The next morning Ruby takes a bundle of 500 euro bills from the hiding place of his prey in a cemetery, hands it over to the homeless and puts them in an accommodation where “no questions are asked”.

Now Ruby and Quentin overpower two of Vogel's henchmen who Quentin has already beaten badly. Ruby forces the two villains to take him to Vogel as a "prisoner". There he shoots Vogel's bodyguards, but is shot in the knee by the Mafioso and then threatened with death by him. The injured Quentin appears in time and shoots Vogel, but is hit in the shoulder and apparently sinks to the ground, dying. Out of compassion and the suspicion that Quentin will die, Ruby now promises him to open his desired bistro with him. The police appear and find the two crooks sitting on the ground. It turns out that Quentin may have just exaggerated and he's actually fine.

Reviews

“'Ruby & Quentin' is a comedy that works over its entire length and ends up with a bit more story than usual. Everything is carried by its two main actors and can convince thanks to the almost consistently successful gags. If you are just looking for entertainment, you will find it here in an appealing form that does not drift into fecal humor à la 'Scary Movie' and should therefore also appeal to older people. If you look at the current blockbuster landscape in cinemas, there is a film in the cinema that shows you that extremely good films are also made outside of Hollywood. "

“Fast-paced comedy about opposing characters who depend on each other. In addition to a lot of gossip and a few weaker gags on the whole quite entertaining. "

“The whole thing is a ludicrous comedy that presents French characters with American timing and can do things that no one else wants to risk - two masculine stars in drag outfits on the streets of Paris! And there are moments when there is a great deal of coldness in this film, when people become very still and you can feel a loneliness that seems very existential. [...] These are the moments that the best comedies head towards - only to scare them away with a new comic scene. "

- Fritz Göttler: Süddeutsche Zeitung

“Comedy master Francis Veber ('Dinner for Weirdos') has again succeeded in a brilliant comedy after 'A man sees pink', in which everything is just right: strong story, hilarious gags, perfect timing, really good actors and even good action scenes. You can't really do it better. "
