Francis Veber (born July 28, 1937 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) is a French playwright, journalist, screenwriter, film director and producer of Armenian origin.

Life

Veber was already successful as a screenwriter in the 1970s with films such as The Filzlaus or The Big Blonde with the Black Shoe .

His first film The Toys with Pierre Richard was an instant hit. One of his bigger international successes was Daddy Cool - My Father the Hero with Gérard Depardieu in 1994.

As a screenwriter, he also had no problems supplying the templates for US versions of his successful films or even going to work as a director himself. Both The Toy (remake as The Playmate with Richard Pryor , 1982) and The Big Blonde with the Black Shoe (remake as The Crazy With the Violin Case with Tom Hanks , 1985) were implemented in this way. The Bank Trio (remake of The Fugitives , 1986) was a huge commercial success.

In Veber's films and scripts, the protagonists often go by the name Francois Pignon or Francois Perrin, although obviously they are not the same characters. Pierre Richard alone wore either the name Francois Pignon or Francois Perrin in four films. Even Jacques Brel , Patrick Dewaere , Jacques Villeret , Daniel Auteuil and Gad Elmaleh played characters who wore these names.
