life and work

Patrick Dewaere was the child of a showman family. Under the leadership of his mother Mado Maurin († 2013 at the age of 98), Patrick appeared with his four brothers and his sister in films, television films and series. They were known under the name "Les petits Maurin". The family lived in Paris.

At the age of 17, Dewaere learned that he was not the birth child of his mother's ex-husband, Pierre-Marie Bourdeaux, but that of the orchestra conductor and singer Michel Têtard. In 1968 he took on the name "Dewaere", which his maternal great-grandmother inspired him. A year earlier he had met his first wife Sotha, a dark-skinned actress and co-founder of the experimental theater "Café de la Gare". They separated in 1970, but remained married for a total of eleven years.

From 1968 he worked with the “Café de la Gare”, where he met Miou-Miou and Gérard Depardieu , with whom, after numerous supporting roles in various films, he had his breakthrough in the scandal-ridden comedy Die Ausgebufften . Miou-Miou became Dewaere's partner and mother of their daughter Angèle (* 1974). She left Dewaere for the singer Julien Clerc .

Patrick Dewaere became one of the most popular actors in French cinema in the 1970s. Between 1977 and 1982 he was nominated five times for France's most important César film award in the “ Best Actor ” category. In his work, Dewaere was restless and extremely conscientious, which may have given rise to his depressive moods. He was also known to have serious drug problems. He cemented his status as a wild and ruthless actor in Alain Courneau's cult film Série noire (1979). In his roles, Dewaere was for a long time fixed on the type of rebel youth. Only in his later films was his comedic and dramatic versatility expressed. He worked particularly frequently with director Bertrand Blier .

In 1980, Dewaere was violent against a journalist when he made public his marriage to Elsa Chalier. As a result, the actor was ignored by the French press, his name was even abbreviated with his initials. Elsa Chalier left him in 1982 because of his best friend Coluche . Shortly afterwards, on July 16, 1982, Dewaere shot himself with a rifle in his Paris home. At this time he was preparing for the film Édith et Marcel by Claude Lelouch , in which he should have played the boxer Marcel Cerdan . After Dewaeres death his son Marcel Cerdan jr took over the role. at the side of Évelyne Bouix , who embodied Édith Piaf .

He was buried in the grave of his in-laws in the Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay cemetery.

In addition to his daughter Angèle Herry (* 1974), Dewaere also left his daughter Lola Dewaere (* 1979) from his marriage to Elsa Chalier. Angèle was adopted in 1992 by Julien Clerc , her mother Miou-Miou's one-time partner . Today she works as a screenwriter , her half-sister Lola Dewaere is an actress.
