The Unwanted Son is a French film from 1980 based on a story by Daniel Biasini and directed by Claude Sautet .
content
Bruno Calgagni returns to France after five years in a US prison for drug abuse and drug trafficking. Again he settles in his father's apartment, but there are no warm feelings towards the people of old.
music
The first part of the elegiac theme of Philippe Sardes’s film music follows that of a well-known jazz standard , with the accompaniment laid out in the manner of a courtly step dance . The second part of the theme has long-lasting melody tones , which are underlaid by modal twists in the harmonization and in this way imitate a movement resembling a child. It is typical of Sardi's music in Sautet's films that he makes a further comment on what is merely depicted. His music here is a complaint about the father's lack of generosity in relation to his son, which is to some extent due to the lack of resources in the semi-proletarian milieu far removed from the court.
At the moment of the film, in which the viewer opens onto the Atlantic, Sarde changes to the beaming Tutti . The Atlantic , La Rochelle and the Île de Ré are characterized by Sardis music as a safe vanishing point for the protagonists of the film. Sautet's commitment to being an American director in France is also congenially highlighted here by Sarde.
The musical séance of joint devotional listening to a long-playing record of the opera La Bohème at the bookseller Adrien Dussart opens up the possibility of passion douce for the hero Bruno , a life beyond drugs.
criticism
film-dienst 6/1983: Skilfully staged drama that impressively describes human fears. Although the staging is conventional and "old-fashioned", the extraordinary actors always protect the film from whitewashing noncommittality.
Awards
In 1981 the film won a César for Best Supporting Actor ; There were nominations in the categories of Best Leading Actor , Best Director , Best Production Design , Best Sound and Best Supporting Actress .
