A few days with me is a French literary film adaptation by Claude Sautet from 1988. It is based on a novel by Jean-François Josselin .

action

After a long stay in a psychiatric hospital, the mentally ill businessman Martial Pasquier slowly finds his way back to life. He is co-owner of a department store chain that, in addition to its headquarters in Paris, has numerous branches in the province. In his private life things are not going as well, as his marriage of convenience only exists on paper. His wife Lucie has long been living in a relationship with Paul, who is employed in the company, which Martial accepts indifferently. Martial is viewed critically by management, including his mother, as most believe he is not cured. Shortly after he was released from the clinic, when he again took part in a board meeting, he was sent to five unprofitable branches in the province as a stage manager, as these had not been checked for a long time. He unemotionally agrees and begins his tour in Limoges .

On site, he is humbly received by branch manager Raoul Fonfrin, which soon turns out to be hypocrisy. The fact that Martial wants to see the cash books of the last few months makes Fonfrin particularly irritated, since he has embezzled funds. Nevertheless, he invites Martial to dinner with his wife and friends. Dinner passes over superficial chatter, which Martial also describes as such on request. Still, nobody is embarrassed. Because he has no place to stay for the night, Madame Fonfrin Martial has a room prepared in her house. Here Martial also meets the family's maid, Francine. The next day the Fonfrins are again relieved that Martial wants to leave, but he stays in town. He rents a stately apartment for three months and invites Francine over. After they both spent the night together, Francine quits her job with the Fonfrins at Martial's instigation. Instead, she lives with Martial, who buys her fine clothes and throws a party for her friends. Her friend Fernand, with whom Martial and Francine now have a love triangle, can even find a job in Fonfrin's department store. At the same time, he continues to check the cash books until Fonfrin confesses to having embezzled millions of euros.

Martial's social experiment, in which he himself abandons part of his pathological indifference, is interrupted when he hears over the phone that his mother is doing badly. The next day he travels back to Paris, where he realizes that it was all just a trick by his mother, the counselors and doctors to get him out of Limoges. Martial rearranges his life: he separates from his wife Lucie and goes through all the company's cash books. It turns out that managing director Bassompierre, who is Martial's mother's lover, has been making money for years. Martial dismisses him and replaces him with Paul, his wife's boyfriend. He himself announced that he would give up his shares in the company. He returns to Limoges and settles there with the help of Fonfrin. Francine has since left Fernand and lives with the jealous pub Rocky. Both Martial and Fernand are deeply saddened by this decision.

One day all of the friends meet in Rocky's pub, where Francine works as a waitress. When Rocky goes to get some wine, Fernand stabs him to death. Martial arrives a short time later and convinces Fernand to flee and give him the knife. According to his medical history, Martial is declared insane and re-admitted to psychiatry.

criticism

For the film service , some days was with me a “melancholy comedy characterized by intelligent dialogues and quiet humor, carefully staged and excellently performed.” Cinema found that director Sautet “waddles the bourgeoisie off” with the film. His melancholy-tragic film shines with polished dialogues and subtly acting actors. "
