occupation

Mado is a 1976 French film based on a novel by Gilberte Chatton and directed by Claude Sautet .

action

Simon, a financier of building speculators and a liberal upper class in his fifties, is faced with serious professional problems. His partner Julien kills himself and leaves a financial gap of six million francs, leaving Simon on the verge of bankruptcy . His emotional life in a sentimental connection with the occasional prostitute Mado also gives evidence of the worsening situation.

backgrounds

The effects of the first severe economic crisis of the post-war period in France during the Giscard d'Estaing era form the mood of this film. The name of the figure of the speculator who unscrupulously derives his personal advantage from this crisis is Lépidon and was not chosen by chance. For Sautet, the names of his film characters have the function of naming their characters in a condensed form. Here the speculator is the shark equipped with scales (see lepidology ). Sautet's striving to always find the right name for his heroes marks his attempt to use the means of his profession to describe society as a whole, similar to Karl Marx .

Reviews

According to Dominik Graf, the film Mado is the very best work of Sautet, who for him seems like one of the last great life-savvy directors of French cinema .

Quote from the lexicon of international films : Claude Sautet depicts the man's crisis in a skilful and at the same time exciting staging and suggests criticism of his generation's view of life.

Awards

In 1976 the film won a César for Best Sound and was nominated in the categories of Best Production Design and Best Supporting Actor.
