Musketeer with blow and stab (original title: Les mariés de l'an II or Les mariés de l'an Deux , West German television title Der Teufelskerl , GDR award title The Bride and Groom of the Year II ) is a coat-and-sword film comedy by Jean -Paul Rappeneau , which was released in France on April 24, 1971, and in the Federal Republic of Germany on September 14, 1972.
action
Before the beginning of the French Revolution, Nicolas Philibert killed an aristocrat in a duel, therefore fled to the United States and left his wife Charlotte behind. When they were both children, an old gypsy predicted that Charlotte would have a prince for a husband and that Nicolas would make his fortune in a new world. At least part of the prophecy seems to be fulfilled: Nicolas becomes wealthy in South Carolina and wants to marry rich, but first has to get a divorce from Charlotte. He therefore traveled to France in 1793, where he also wanted to do business. There the revolution now dominates life, the people are starving and their shipload of grain is confiscated by the revolutionaries. As a supposed spy, he is even threatened with execution . When he prevented the noble Pauline, who carried out an attack on the leading representatives of the people at a revolutionary celebration, from being shot immediately, he had to flee.
In the country he falls into the hands of the royalists, who also consider him a spy and try to kill him. Only in a castle-like shelter of the royalists does Pauline, whom he rescued, clarify the situation. Here he also meets Charlotte, who meanwhile has plans to marry the Marquis de Guérandes. It soon becomes clear, however, that neither Charlotte von Philibert nor the marquis of his sister Pauline - both secretly love each other. After a series of mix-ups, a royalist prince inflames with affection for Charlotte and kidnaps her behind the Austrian lines to the emigrants, so that her prophecy also seems to be fulfilled. Nicolas pursues both of them, however, unintentionally dragging the beleaguered troops of the young republic into a successful attack on the Austrians. Meanwhile, Pauline is happy with her brother Henri.
Against all odds, Charlotte and Philibert are still a belligerent but happy couple fifteen years later, and the prophecy is also being fulfilled in a completely different way than was initially expected: Nicolas makes his fortune as a revolutionary hero in the new world of the First Empire becomes Marshal of France . When Napoleon made him prince, Charlotte was also married to the prince from prophecy.
occupation
Jean-Paul Rappeneau originally wanted to cast Claude Jade and Michel Duchaussoy for the incestuous siblings. As a contrast to the Belmondo / Jobert couple, he then decided on the dark-haired couple Laura Antonelli (then Belmondo's fiancée) and Sami Frey . The young Patrick Dewaere can be seen in a small supporting role as a revolutionary volunteer.
Distribution title
The literal translation of the original title was largely incomprehensible for the average German-speaking audience, because the counting of the revolutionary calendar (Roman numerals, starting with the Valmy canonade of 1792, i.e. on II “Year 2” i.e. 1793) is largely unknown in Germany. In order to at least make it clear to the audience that it was a cloak-and-sword film, the German and Austrian distributors fell for Musketeer with a bang - although the musketeers customary in the genre , namely the Musketeers of the Guard , had already been disbanded in 1793 the only musketeers shown in the film were the Austrian line infantrymen .
In the English-speaking world, The Scarlet Buccaneer , The Scoundrel and The Swashbuckler were chosen for marketing for similar reasons .
At Progress Film-Verleih , however, it was decided to use a literal translation of the title of the GDR version created by the Studio for Synchronization of DEFA (speakers: Kurt Kachlicki, Helga Piur , Winfried Wagner, Barbara Adolph , Martin Flörchinger , Helmut Müller-Lankow , Hans -Peter Minetti , Wolfgang Lohse; dialogues: Manfred Heidicke; director: Hella Graf; editor: Katarina Klafki; sound: Heinz Baldin).
