action

The beautiful Nelly celebrates her hen party in Venezuela with her Italian fiancé Vittorio and his family . When they are in bed in the evening, Nelly changes her mind, packs her things and flees to a hotel. There she meets Martin, a French compatriot. Meanwhile, the bellhop informs Vittorio about Nelly's whereabouts. He appears angry in the hotel and enters her room via the balcony. He thinks she is having an affair and looks for her lover. When they get into a loud argument and beat each other, Martin comes in to prevent worse. Nelly then flees with Vittorio's car and looks for her boss Alex Fox in his nightclub. To be able to leave Venezuela, she needs the wages that she owed her for months. However, he cannot give her the money. When the angry Vittorio also shows up at the club, Alex leaves Nelly alone in his office, whereupon she steals a painting by Toulouse-Lautrec to compensate for the outstanding wages .

Nelly returns to the hotel with the painting and wants to sell it to Martin. However, he doesn't have enough money, but lets himself be persuaded to drive her to the airport. There he gets her a plane ticket to Paris . He himself returns to a deserted island in the Caribbean . When he arrives there in his boat, Nelly, surprisingly, comes towards him, who had not got through customs with the painting and had allowed herself to be flown to his island. She now hopes Martin can take her to Santo Domingo in his boat , where she wants to sell the painting. When Martin tries to take her back to the mainland instead, Nelly leaks the boat, causing it to sink. Back on the island, the angry Martin barricades himself in his house, so that Nelly is forced to spend the night on the landing stage.

The next morning Martin begins to build a new boat. While he is getting wood for it in the jungle, Nelly sneaks into his house for something to eat. In the evening she succeeds in locking Martin in his cellar. However, he finds a different exit and is now trying to evict her from his house. When he throws a pineapple at her head, Nelly falls to the floor, unconscious. Martin worriedly carries her to his porch and gets her something to drink. When she comes to, she gives him a deep kiss. After the following night together, Martin is ready to drive them to Santo Domingo. Nelly, who has now hoped for a future together, runs away crying. She finds a small hut and settles there. Meanwhile, Martin's wife Jessie is holding a conference for her company in New York , for which Martin creates perfumes on his island. Martin once made a name for himself as a perfume manufacturer. He was fed up with fame, marriage and modern civilization. As it turns out, the company has Miss Mark, a detective, watch him every step of the way.

Martin finally invites Nelly to dinner at his house. When he's finished with his preparations, a thunderstorm approaches. He waits and waits, but Nelly doesn't come. He finally goes to her hut and finds her reading on her bed. When they get into an argument, a man suddenly appears in front of Nelly's window. Vittorio and Alex have arrived on the island with several men. While Martin is beaten up, Vittorio brings Nelly onto his yacht. Meanwhile, Alex finds his Toulouse Lautrec painting, which suffered badly in the shipwreck caused by Nelly. While the yacht finally drives away, Martin remains helpless on the shore and has to watch his house go up in flames.

The next morning, Miss Mark flies around the island in a plane and sees Martin lying unconscious on the jetty. He is brought to the mainland in a rescue helicopter. When he regained his strength, he drove to New York with his wife, where she reminded him of his contract, according to which he would have to create new fragrances for the company for another eight years, otherwise he could face jail time. Without hesitation, Martin opts for the latter. After serving his sentence, he returns to Venezuela. He visits Vittorio, who is now living with another woman. At the hotel where he once met Nelly, the concierge hands him a message that Nelly has returned to France. When Martin appears there in front of their house, Nelly falls happily into his arms.

Reviews

"Inventively pointed comedy, which laughs at the romance of the escape from the world with its witty charm and entertains spiritedly despite some shortcomings," said the lexicon of international films . For Prisma , Die Schöne Wilden was “a fast-paced, extraordinary film comedy about the longing for an ideal world that relies less on a spectacular staging than on the excellent performance of its two main actors”. The conclusion of Cinema was: “Charming, funny fun [...]. A lovely rendezvous under palm trees. "
