Arnold Marquis

Arnold Marquis (born April 6, 1921 in Dortmund , † November 24, 1990 in Berlin ) was a German actor and voice actor . He was one of the busiest German voice actors and synchronized with his distinctive voice a. a. John Wayne , Robert Mitchum , Richard Widmark , James Coburn and Kirk Douglas regularly.

Life

Marquis graduated from the drama school attached to the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus by theater director Louise Dumont . The Schauspielhaus Bochum hired him as an understudy. During the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . After 1945 he went to Berlin. There he appeared in productions by Boleslaw Barlog at the Schlosspark Theater in Berlin-Steglitz .

A year later he took on his first dubbing role at the Berlin-based Phoenix-Synchron , which was to be followed by over 1,400 more. Marquis was due to its unmistakable timbre a. a. the German voice of Humphrey Bogart , John Wayne , Robert Mitchum , Kirk Douglas , Richard Widmark , James Coburn , Charles Bronson , George C. Scott , Anthony Quinn , Yves Montand , Lino Ventura , Trevor Howard , Bourvil , Bud Spencer , Geoffrey Keen , Jack Klugman , Lee Marvin , Lionel Stander , Max from the TV series Hart but cordially and James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon in the TV series Smoking Colts .

Marquis' identification with his dubbing projects was extraordinary. Sound engineers who worked with him reverently called him and his colleague Gert Günther Hoffmann "kings of voice actors". After the death of John Wayne in 1979 he produced at Wayne honor the Single John Wayne, the hero in the chant , he called him "the greatest of the Cowboys, John Wayne, my friend."

Theater engagements took him to Munich , Frankfurt am Main , Hamburg and finally back to Berlin. His distinctive voice has also been used in numerous radio plays. In 1973 he spoke a leading role in the modern radio play classic "Demolition", one of the first productions in artificial head stereophony . In the 1970s he appeared in several Raymond Chandler crime novels. There he mostly played the main role of the investigator, but occasionally also other roles. In the radio play thriller by Hans Gruhl he took on the role of Commissioner Nogees ("Nogees with two E").

Marquis' last appearance as an actor was in the film Otto - Der Ausserfriesische , in which he plays the Baron von Platt . In 1990 he died of lung cancer and was buried in the Dahlem forest cemetery. The grave has since been abandoned.

Arnold Marquis was married three times. He had a daughter.
