action
Former Senator William Tadlock is the initiator and sponsor of a settler trek that is to start from Missouri to Oregon. Tadlock hires the aging, experienced trek leader Dick Summers to bring the motorcade safely to its destination. His alcohol problems and his steadily dwindling eyesight cause problems between Summers and the self-righteous Tadlock over and over again.
Due to Tadlock's ruthless and ruthless manner and a series of accidents (which also claim human lives) there is finally a " mutiny " of the settlers, led by Lije Evans, who then replaces Tadlock as the trek leader. Furthermore, Tadlock's behavior unintentionally leads to the death of his son, who wanted to prove himself to him. Tadlock only realizes his mistakes late.
Despite all the differences in the main characters, the film ultimately shows everyone's solidarity when it comes to mastering the hardships - such as Indian raids or natural imponderables - on the long way. The film shows z. B. As the first big budget film since 1930 ( The Big Trail ), how the settlers lower their cars with ropes down a canyon .

criticism
The film was received mostly positively. Film critic Roger Ebert judged that it was “at least a well-made and professional Hollywood Western” who was “beautifully photographed”. He also found Richard Widmark and Robert Mitchum did a great job in their unfamiliar roles and Kirk Douglas did a good job. But the film doesn't really work as a drama, also because Harold Hecht and Andrew McLaglen have buried the promising approaches under a lot of Western clichés.
The lexicon of international films says that the western is only played average and disappointed despite the prominent cast .
The Protestant film observer also has objections : “The naive and humorous description rarely does justice to the monumental subject, especially since the script lacks logic, dramatic intensity and psychological precision work. Since the strived for authenticity only affects the external appearance, it remains with a romantic, contemplative film picture sheet, which one from the age of 15 is happy to look at.
