John Mitchum

John Newman Mitchum (born September 6, 1919 in Bridgeport , Connecticut , † November 29, 2001 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Mitchum was born two years after his brother Robert . His father had died in an accident before he was born, which is why the brothers grew up on an uncle's farm in Delaware . In 1930 they moved to New York City to live with their mother, who had meanwhile remarried . When his brother Robert married Gloria Grahame's older sister , he moved to San Diego with them . Between 1944 and 1946 he did his military service in the United States Army . The following year he made his feature film debut in a supporting role in Frank Wisbar's western The Prairie . He then played minor roles in various films, often not mentioned in the credits, including many alongside his brother. From the mid-1950s he also played in television productions, including guest roles in Department M , Smoking Colts and Twilight Zone .

In My Fair Lady and westward attracts the wind , he joined as a singer in appearance. In 1964 he recorded the album Our Land, Our Heritage: Stories of America's Great Songs with Dan Blocker . In the 1970s he played repeatedly with Clint Eastwood ; In addition to the westerns A Stranger Without a Name and The Texan , he portrayed the police inspector Frank DiGiorgio in the first three films of the Dirty Harry series . In the 1980s, he only appeared sporadically, in addition to a guest role in the series Quincy , he still played in some television films, including in 1989, laid on the cross next to his brother Robert and his son James. Mitchum has been married four times. He had two daughters and a son. His son also died in 2001.
