action

Inspector Harry Callahan is needed to start a hostage drama in downtown San Francisco . In order not to cause a major bloodbath, Callahan drives his company car into the liquor store concerned and, after a brief skirmish, brings down the hostage-takers. But the incident has far-reaching consequences, because the action costs the city $ 14,379, and Harry is transferred to the police personnel department as a punishment, where he u. a. Takes part in aptitude tests for new inspectors. He reluctantly acknowledges that the proportion of women should be increased. But the young policewoman Officer Kate Moore impresses him with her determination.

Meanwhile, a group called "People's Revolutionary Armed Forces" tried to steal M16 assault rifles , ammunition, C4 explosives and bazookas from a warehouse owned by the Pacific Overseas Shipping after they stole a gasworks delivery truck and murdered its two drivers. The group apparently consists of disaffected Vietnam veterans who want to fight the system. Of two inspectors who happened to pass the depot with the gate open, one (DiGeorgio, Callahan's former partner) examines the premises, the other calls for reinforcements. While trying to arrest the burglars, DiGeorgio is stabbed from behind by Bobby Maxwell, in which he accidentally shoots a burglar. His partner is run over while trying to stop the burglar's delivery van. With Harry being reassigned to the homicide squad, he needs a new partner. Inspector Moore is assigned to Harry as a new partner. Callahan initially has concerns that the young woman would not be able to make the right decisions in dangerous situations in the field, but Kate Moore grows at the side of the experienced police officer.

Shortly thereafter, the “People's Revolutionary Armed Forces” published a demand for a million dollars, otherwise they want to carry out bomb attacks in the city. Through the body of a member of the group, a former prostitute who was killed in the warehouse shootout, Callahan and Moore stumble upon a brothel where Wanda, another former prostitute who is believed to be part of the group, worked. In their further investigation, the investigators come across a small group of “black anarchists”, whose leader Ed Mustapha can provide some important clues about the mysterious “revolutionary armed forces of the people”. His information leads Callahan and Moore to a priest who has known about the radical organization for a long time and has consciously covered it. When the wanted ex-prostitute suddenly shows up in the church and wants to kill Harry, Kate can shoot her from behind in time. To prevent further bloodshed, the clergyman is now revealing the whereabouts of the "People's Revolutionary Armed Forces", who have since increased their ransom demand to $ 5 million. To reinforce their demands, the terrorists strike again and kidnap the mayor of the city in a planned action. In doing so, they kill bystanders.

Showdown

On the prison island of Alcatraz there is finally a showdown between Harry, Kate and the blackmailers. Moore manages to free the mayor. However, the following shootout ends with the death of Kate, who is shot several times in the chest by the leader of the gang. As the last surviving blackmailer, Bobby Maxwell fled with his MP and the hostage to a watchtower, but was shot down by Callahan with one of the stolen bazookas along with the viewing platform. Harry is visibly affected by the death of the young policewoman and punishes the mayor, who wants to thank him for saving his life with a "letter of appreciation", with contempt.

Reviews

"... Dirty Harry III offers black and white action painting without any critical background ..."

“All too brutal police film that pleads for police brutality in the face of ruthless criminality. At least a certain social criticism becomes clear behind the events: The criminals are mentally and spiritually destroyed former Vietnam fighters who not only learned to kill in the Far East, but also found it pleasurable. The tough intervention of the law is interpreted as necessary in the sense of a counter-blow. "

Sequels

Part IV, Dirty Harry Comes Back (Sudden Impact), came seven years later, in 1983.
