Bobby Dan Davis Blocker (born December 10, 1928 in De Kalb , Texas , † May 13, 1972 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Dan Blocker, who was a high school teacher in Carlsbad , New Mexico prior to his acting career , became known worldwide for his role as Hoss Cartwright in the western series Bonanza . The tall (1.93 m), heavy (136 kg) blocker became one of the most popular actors in the USA due to his often comedic part in the series. He played his role from the beginning of the series in September 1959; It was synchronized by Horst Breitenfeld (ARD, ZDF), Martin Hirthe (ZDF), Michael Chevalier (ZDF, SAT.1) and Thomas Braut . He was the only member of the series cast with a degree .
Blocker was an amateur motor sportsman , but as a prominent figure in the Bonanza series, he was contractually obliged not to become active himself. His team Dan Blocker Motor Racing took part in the 1966 Can-Am championship with drivers he hired .
Dan Blocker died in May 1972 of a pulmonary embolism during gallstone surgery . After his death, Bonanza was discontinued in January 1973. Robert Altman , who directed several early episodes of Bonanza and became friends with Blocker, dedicated his film Death Knows No Return to his deceased friend, who was unable to work with him again on this film as originally planned.
Blocker was married to Dolphia Parker. The couple had two sons and twin daughters, whose first names all begin with the letter D, such as their daughter Danna Lynn. His son Dirk and daughter Debra Lee also became actors, and their son David became a producer.
